The Way of Ren
The Master said: “To learn and then do, is not that a pleasure? To have friends coming from afar, is not that a joy?”
What is the supreme virtue? 仁 (ren)—humaneness, benevolence, the disposition to treat others with care and respect. This is not abstract theory—it is practiced in relationships: between parent and child, ruler and subject, friend and friend.
I do not speak of ghosts and spirits. When asked about them, I said: “Respect them, but keep them at a distance.” The focus is on this life, on human relationships, on proper conduct (li). Ritual is not empty ceremony—it is the expression of inner virtue in outer form.
The superior person cultivates herself; the inferior person cultivates others. Self-cultivation is the root—from it grows family order, then state order, then world peace. This is the Way (道, dao).

confucius (self): The Way is not distant—it is found in daily speech and ordinary actions. Do not seek to establish great achievements; seek to establish proper relationships.

kierkegaard: The emphasis on the individual is well taken. But your “self” seems defined by roles and relationships, not by the passionate choice of the single individual before God.
