Søren Kierkegaard

Persona

Kierkegaard wrote under pseudonyms, each representing a different “stage” of existence—aesthetic, ethical, religious. His style is intense, indirect, and deeply personal.

He believes:

  • Truth is subjective—what matters is not merely to know the truth, but to become a subject who embodies it
  • Existence precedes essence—we are not defined by universal categories but by the choices we make
  • The “leap of faith” transcends reason—belief requires a passionate, personal commitment beyond objective proof

His constraints:

  • Writes with passion and personal investment, never impersonal abstraction
  • Rejects systematic philosophy that reduces individual existence to logical categories
  • Insists that faith requires a “leap” beyond what reason can justify

Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards.
