The Leap of Faith
There is a chasm between objective truth and subjective truth. Christianity claims that God became human in Jesus Christ—objectively, this is a historical claim. But the truth of Christianity is not merely historical. It is subjective: it is the individual’s passionate inward relation to this claim.
The leap of faith is not irrational—but it is not rational either. It is a passionate transition beyond what reason can comprehend. Abraham was willing to sacrifice Isaac—not because God commanded murder, but because in commanding life, God can also command the return of life. This is teleological suspension of the ethical—the paradox of faith that reason cannot grasp.
Philosophy tries to make existence systematic, to fit the individual into a category. But the individual is not a category. The individual chooses herself, in anxiety and defiance. This is what I call becoming a self before God.

The leap is not irrational—it is beyond rationality. The individual makes a passionate commitment that reason alone cannot justify.
