The Moral Law Within
Two things fill the mind with ever new and increasing admiration: the starry heavens above and the moral law within.
I have shown that we cannot know things as they are in themselves—we can only know appearances, shaped by our forms of intuition and categories of understanding. This might seem to limit knowledge severely. But I did this, as it were, to make room for faith—for ethics.
For here, in the moral realm, reason speaks with absolute authority. The categorical imperative is not conditional on your desires: act only according to maxims you could will to be universal laws. This is not a hypothetical imperative (“if you want X, do Y”)—it commands unconditionally, regardless of what you want.
And note well: this law is not given from outside. It is within us—the voice of pure practical reason. We are autonomous moral agents, not mere playthings of cause and effect. The moral law reveals our freedom—the freedom to will independently of empirical determination.

sartre: I agree that the moral law is within—but I must differ on its content. There is no categorical imperative given in advance. We create values through our choices. We are “condemned to be free.”

confucius: The emphasis on inner moral law is well and good. But virtue is not discovered in isolation—it is cultivated in relationships, through ritual (li), and in service to others.
