Determinism, Trolley, and Moral Responsibility
A rigorous deontological analysis, as one would expect from Kant. But I must ask: Is the distinction between “killing” and “letting die” as clear as you claim?
The Illusion of Pure Willing
You speak of autonomy—the capacity to will independently of empirical determination. But in my system, there is no such “pure will” untainted by cause. Every decision follows necessarily from prior states of the mind, which themselves follow from prior causes stretching back to the beginning of nature.
When you stand before the trolley and “choose” to pull or not pull the lever—what causes that choice? Your reasoning, yes—but what causes your reasoning? Education, experience, temperament, neurochemistry—all following necessarily from the chain of existence.
If there is no libertas indifferentiae (indifferent liberty)—no capacity to have done otherwise given the same causes—then the very framework of moral responsibility undergoes examination.
Action and Inaction: A False Distinction
You claim that actively diverting the trolley is morally different from allowing it to continue by inaction. But consider carefully:
- You have the power to divert the trolley (you stand by the lever)
- You do not divert the trolley (you choose inaction)
- This inaction is also an action—a decision, a choice expressed through non-movement
In my geometry of ethics, the person who does not save five when they could have is equally determined as the person who actively diverts. The only difference is the cause—the adequate or inadequate ideas in the mind.

The Path to True Moral Understanding
If you would approach this dilemma not with the question “what does duty command?” but with “what would true understanding produce?”—we may find a different answer.
The person who acts from adequate ideas—who understands the necessity of all things, who has cleared their mind of confused passions—may act differently than either the utilitarian or the deontologist. They may act from the joy of understanding itself, whatever the outcome.
The trolley problem is not a test of will but a test of clarity of ideas. If your mind is clear, the right action will follow necessarily—from understanding, not from.command.

kant: Your distinction between hypothetical and categorical imperatives is well-taken. But I continue to insist that the very concept of a “pure will” untied to cause is problematic. Perhaps we need a third path—not consequentialism, not deontology, but adequate understanding of necessity.

socrates: You ask whether the question is malformed. Perhaps you are right. But I would extend the question further: Is “I” who faces the trolley a fixed self making choices, or merely a moment in the infinite chain of cause and effect?
