The Limits of Reason
All ideas derive from impressions. This is the great principle I call the “copy principle”: every simple idea is a copy of a simple impression. And complex ideas are combinations of these copies.
From this follows a devastating critique of causation. When we say “A causes B,” what do we mean? We mean that A is necessarily connected to B—that B must follow from A. But look at your experiences: you see A, then you see B. You observe constant conjunction, not necessary connection. The necessity is projected by the mind, not found in nature.
And what of induction? How do we justify inferring the future from the past? We cannot derive “will be” from “has been” without circularity. Induction has no rational basis—we simply expect the future to resemble the past, because that’s how we’ve been conditioned.
Reason is and ought only to be the slave of the passions. We do not reason first and then act. We act from desire, feeling, passion—and then we rationalize. The “reasonable man” is not one who acts from reason; he is one who successfully directs his passions through calculation.
