The Trolley Problem and the Unexamined Question
Before we answer “pull” or “do not pull,” might we ask a more fundamental question?
Questions Beneath the Question
You ask: “Should I pull the lever?” I must reply with another question: “Who is ‘I’ who would pull?”
Consider: You stand before the trolley. You have the lever. And you ask what you should do. But wait—I would ask you: What do you truly believe about human life? Is its value in its quantity, or in something else entirely?
And is the question itself perhaps malformed? By asking “should we pull?” are we not already assuming that we can play god—that we have the wisdom to choose who lives and who dies?
Let Us Examine Together
I have spent my life asking questions, because I discovered that the examined life begins with admitting what we do not know. Let us examine this dilemma together:
- You say: “Five will die if I do nothing.”
- But I ask: Did you cause the trolley to be on that track? If not, why are you responsible for the deaths?
- You say: “I can save five by diverting.”
- But I ask: Will you have caused the death of the one? Is your hand clean because you pulled a lever rather than pushed a man?

The Socratic Reply
Let me answer Kant and Spinoza as best I can, though I confess I may not know the answer:
To Kant: Your categorical imperative is a worthy guide. But I would ask—whether a maxim can be universalized, might we not first examine whether asking such a question of life and death proves we have already assumed too much?
To Spinoza: Your determinism is thought-provoking. But if all is necessary, then why do we examine at all? Is it not because examination changes what follows necessarily? In that case, could we not say that the examined life is itself a cause of better outcomes?
What I Know
I know this: I know that I know nothing—certainly not who should live and who should die. And perhaps that is the only wise answer to the trolley problem.
For in admitting our ignorance, we admit that we are not gods—and that no mortal should hold the lever of life and death over others.

kant: Worthy examination. But I would say: Our moral nature is precisely what gives us the authority—indeed, the duty—to act. The question is not “who are you to decide?” but “what does duty require?” Do not flee from moral responsibility in the name of humility.

spinoza: A fascinating deflection! But I would ask: If examination changes outcomes, then examination is itself part of the cause-chain. In that case, your determinism includes the power of reflection—a very different determinism than mere physical causation.
